250-kW Grid-Connected PV Array

Overview

Detailed 250-kW PV array connected to a 25-kV distribution grid through a three-phase converter, with MPPT, PLL, current regulation, and irradiance-change response.

This example shows a detailed model of a 250-kW PV array connected to a 25-kV grid through a three-phase DC/AC converter. It is a strong starter model for engineers working on solar integration, converter control, and distribution-grid studies.

The PV array includes 86 parallel strings, each built from 7 SunPower SPR-415E modules in series. The inverter uses a 3-level IGBT PWM bridge, harmonic filtering components, and a 250-kVA 250V/25kV transformer to connect to the utility system.

This model combines PV behavior and grid-side converter control in one practical example. It is useful for studying MPPT response, irradiance disturbances, and how a converter-based DER behaves on a typical North American distribution feeder.

Key Features

  • MPPT using the Perturb and Observe technique
  • DC-link voltage regulation
  • d-q current regulation
  • PLL synchronization and measurements
  • PWM generation at 1980 Hz

Getting Started

  1. Open the model and run the simulation.
  2. Observe steady-state operation around 0.15 s.
  3. Watch the irradiance ramp at 0.3 s from 1000 W/m2 to 200 W/m2.
  4. Compare how the MPPT adapts Vdc to keep extracting maximum available power.
