Field-Oriented Control of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Overview

Wide-speed IPMSM drive with field-oriented control, MTPA, field weakening, and space-vector PWM.

This example demonstrates wide-speed operation of a 50 kW IPMSM drive using field-oriented control with maximum torque per ampere and field-weakening strategies. It is a strong transportation and electric-drive seed post.

The model includes a 550 V DC bus, a two-level three-phase converter, an IPMSM machine, and an FOC controller with d-q current regulation, speed control, torque limiting, MTPA, and field weakening.

This post expands the initial content beyond grid studies into mobility and industrial drives. It also aligns well with transportation-focused community segments and motor-control discussions.

Key Features

  • Wide-speed operation including overspeed region
  • MTPA optimization for lower current magnitude
  • Field weakening for high-speed operation
  • Generator-mode operation in one of the test cases
  • Space-vector PWM at 8 kHz

Getting Started

  1. Choose one of the built-in tests and run the simulation.
  2. Compare normal-speed and overspeed behavior.
  3. Observe the effect of disabling MTPA on current magnitude and losses.
  4. Run the wide-speed test to explore field-weakening behavior.
